Personal Brief Iwan Tirta graduated from University of Indonesia, Law Degree and became Professor of international law on the same university. He went to London School of Economics and School of Oriental & African Studies. On 1964 he went to Yale University, New Heaven, Connecticut (US) graduated on Law Degree in 1965. Three years later he received a fellowship from Stevenson Adlai Foundation, United Nations, New York and backed to Jakarta, Indonesia on 1970. His art vision attract him to make some research on batik art and resulted a book called Batik, Pattern and Batik which was published by Jambatan on 1967. He got scholarship from John D. Rockefeller III Foundation New York to study Central Java imperial dance. Some of his interesting publications are Batik The Magic Cloth, on 1974, a cooperation masterpiece with Raymond Lau and got sponsor from Pertamina, an Indonesian oil state company. On June 7, 1996, another publication called Batik a Play of Light and Shades which was published by Gaya Favorit Press Jakarta and from there on his concentration focusing on batik design. The first exhibition of his batik masterpiece with the theme “Reincarnate Old Motive” was held in Jakarta on 1973. Followed by another exhibition both domestic and international such as in Sydney, Singapore, Melbourne, Canberra, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Cairo, Roma, Paris, Berlin, New York, San Francisco, Dallas, Houston, Rio de Jainero, Brazil, Manila, Fiji, Port Moresby, Bahrain, Sao Paulo, Osaka, and Vancouver. Beside his exhibition Iwan Tirta also conducting some fashion shows during the visit of head of states to Indonesia, such as the visit of Queen Juliana from Netherlands, Queen Elizabeth from England, King and Queen of Span, Princess Lilian from Sweden, King and Queen of Belgium, King of Husein from Jordan, President and Mrs. Reagan from the US and the visit of wives of some head of states to Indonesia. His interest on Haute Couture and fashion made him creating some articles and published at some magazines such as Herper’s Bazaar (US, January 1968), Vogue (France, July 1971), Australian Women’s Day (December 1971), Chic Magazine (November 1973), Architectural Digest (March-April 1975), Maison et Jardin (June 1975), Vogue Living (June 1975), The New York Times (June 26, 1975), Asia Week (September 1976), Orientique (March 1977), HongKong and Standard (November 1978), Living (February 1981), Asia Week (April 1981), New York Daily News (July 2, 1982), National Geographic (January 1989). Another interest is on the traditional accessories (like gold) handy craft within the whole areas of Indonesia, traditional textiles such as tenun ikat, songket and all wood’s handy craft. All were developed by himself into a great creation of arts that finally has an international value and recognized by international community. |
